Comprehensive research involving children who say they remember previous lives is under way, according to an article in The Washington Post.

The reporter accompanies child psychiatrist Jim Tucker to a family where a two-year-old girl, Aija, reportedly has related oddly specific details about another girl, “Nina”, ever since she learned how to talk. The most notable thing the toddler has told her mum is that “Nina” has numbers on her forearm, that “they make her sad” and that “she misses her family.” Once, Aija dramatically declared to her parents, “Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the end of the world!”

Since the 1960s, more than 2,200 children from across the world have described apparent memories from a previous life. These cases have been documented by the University of Virginia’s Division of Perceptual Studies (DOPS), where Professor Tucker is the director.

Sometimes the children give enough information for relatives to pinpoint a deceased person but not always.

The case of two-year old James Leininger is one of the most salient. James remembered names and details from the life of a pilot who was shot down by Japanese forces in World War II.

Another mind-boggling case was a boy named Ryan, who remembered being an actor and talent agent in Hollywood. Ryan was specific enough in his descriptions of names, possessions and people he knew that the actor could be identified as Marty Martyn, who died in 1964.

Many toddlers keep imaginary friends and people, but they don’t normally say things like, “You’re not my real mum” or “I used to be someone else”, yet these have occurred in such cases.

Parents who believe their child is experiencing something that cannot be explained with vivid imagination can turn to Tucker’s department. If a child’s recollections are detailed enough, DOPS opens an investigation.

The most convincing cases tend to occur in children between the ages of two and six. After that, it appears that past-life memories fade.
