Initiative to achieve world peace through mass meditation

January 2024

An initiative to create peace and end war through mass meditation has been launched by an organization called Global Union of Scientists for Peace (GUSP). It is based on the techniques of TM, the global transcendental meditation movement.

A two-week demonstration of how consciousness can be used to achieve peace, involving 10,000 meditators in Hyderabad in India, ended in mid-January.

GUSP’s goal is to create a permanent group of meditators for world peace. The founders assess that a group of the same size as the one in Hyderabad, whose participants continuously employ what is called technologies of consciousness, would be sufficient to ultimately create global peace.

The technique entails reaching a fourth major state of human consciousness – samadhi in the yogic texts – in which the brain waves are coherent and orderly.

In an open letter to U.S. President Joe Biden and “all world leaders”, GUSP refers to several peer reviewed papers indicating that the TM programs for mass meditation work. One study concludes that crime rates in Washington, D.C., dropped 23 percent during a 1993 TM experiment.

It is about “advanced technologies of consciousness”, according to Tony Nader, an M.D. and neuroscientist and the leader of the global TM movement.

“They are not based on faith, prayer, or seeking esoteric or supernatural support. They are based on the fundamental nature of reality as being consciousness and the ability to access and enliven that consciousness”, said Dr Nader.

Meditation is an ancient Indian spiritual practice. TM was developed and brought to the world by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in the 1950s.

The initiative stands in stark contrast to the standard methods, i.e. Nato chief Jens Stoltenberg’s recent statement that “weapons to Ukraine are the way to peace”.
