Scientists doing SETI experiments (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) are looking for proof of intelligent life in other star systems.
But nonhuman intelligence exists here on Earth as well. Whales are known to be among the most intelligent animals, and they are also one of the most ancient species on the planet.
A research team called Whale-SETI was recently able to communicate for 20 minutes with a humpback whale by the name of Twain. As a tool of communication, the researchers used interactive bioacoustic playback, according to an article in Earth.com.
Understanding nonhuman communication on Earth, it is assumed, could be key to recognizing and interpreting signals from intelligent life forms elsewhere in the universe.
