A Chinese meta-analysis shows that practising mindfulness yoga can prevent and treat depression. It “may be considered as a non-medical, low-cost intervention”, the study says.
A total of 22 randomized controlled studies were included, in which 1,101 patients were in the yoga intervention group and 1,115 patients in the control group.
The analysis showed that mindfulness yoga can reduce the level of depression and anxiety and — to a certain extent — prevent and alleviate depression. “Colleges, enterprises, and obstetrics and gynecology hospitals should popularize mindfulness yoga”, the four researchers conclude.
Mindfulness yoga is derived from the asanas of hatha yoga. It focuses on positive thinking and the integration of present-moment awareness with the body, accepting the present as it is.
