Media coverage misrepresented findings of a study on Near Death Experiences, which is an indicator that subject matter expertise is required on covering such phenomena.
A new study, led by researchers at New York University, shows that some cardiac arrest patients revived by CPR had memories afterward despite having been unconscious, and in some of the patients, brain activity was detected during CPR.
Media reports have described the study as an explanation for Near Death Experiences, which isn’t the case. Psychiatrist Bruce Greyson of University of Virginia and cardiologist Pim van Lommel have criticised these media reports and point out that the patients in the study who showed brain activity did not report NDEs, and those who did report NDEs had no brain activity.
